Clearly the trend in holiday polish collections for 2011 is GLITTER. They don’t say that disco and an economic recession go together for nothing! Practically every brand is coming out with either a full line of glitter polishes or including at least a few in a larger collection. It’s been a sight to see all the swatches on the other blogs, and to help you keep track of what will be on the market soon, let’s explore some of the popular brands that are focusing on glitter polishes this season!

So this collection features seven glitters, although none of the colors in this collection are particularly awe-inspiring. But it’s a good chance to stock up on these colors for your collection if you don’t already own them. I plan on hunting down Champagne Bubbles because lord knows I am a sucker for a gold sparkly polish! Plus, this one has larger pieces of silver glitter that form a nice contrast against the bright gold base.

Talk about a collection after my own heart…wow! If you google this collection and look at photos of the display, you will note that it features two rows of the gold polish on the left. It’s definitely the first shade I’ll be buying! The one next to it is also a flakie, so take note if you don’t own one of those already as they are great for layering. I also really like that sort of mauve glitter shade. The silver and white are pretty skippable for me, but they’re nice nonetheless. Actually, the more I stare at that mauve and silver glitter together, the more I really like that combo! Very vintage.

Ok so this collection is for the truly adventuresome! Please see Scrangie for her excellent swatches of these polishes and to experience their true glory as the photo I’ve used doesn’t do them justice. The glitters in some of these shades aren’t even going to pretend to lie flat on the nail, which is why I say they are for the adventuresome. Personally, I can’t stand when larger glitter pieces start to lift off on my nails, so I won’t be getting any of these shades. Once again, though, the gold shade in this collection is very pretty. The thing I like the most about Color Club (even though it’s hard to find in my area) is that they always offer their collections in these nice wham-bam-thank-you-m’aam sets, and they include a topcoat, too!

Remember the other day when I said I liked this polish but probably wouldn’t be buying anymore of them? Yeah, I went back today and got 2 more. For the price, who can resist?! Also, I’d forgotten to pick up the Back Alley Deals shade, which is said to be a dupe for the nails inc. shade, Bloomsbury Square. You can google the other blogs and see for yourself, but I don’t think anyone could tell the difference! And yes, I still had to stand on the bottom shelf and reach up high to get to this display at Walgreens since they still don’t have it out yet.

OPI Muppets collection

Image from

Last but not least (of course, or Miss Piggy would give me a sound headbutt!), is the OPI Muppets collection. I’ve heard that the most popular shade, Rainbow Connection, is sold out in most places already, which is no surprise. This was true of an Ulta I visited this week; however, they did still have quite a few of the gift sets that have Rainbow Connection packaged with Excuse Moi!. If you don’t like either one of those shades, buy the set for the one you want and gift the other to a friend. They’ll love you for it, I promise!

And there is also that kollection which shall not be named that is available exclusively at Wal-Mart. Of course, I re-named the shades in this collection back when it was first announced, and I still think my names are better! Anyway, if you can find it, one of them is a dupe for Rainbow Connection, too.

Are you all glittered out yet? If I missed any collections, please let me know so I can update this post. Also, be sure to post a comment here if you’ve tried any of these glitters, and let me know which are your faves or not!

Krashing the Kardashian Kolors

Posted in Original Posts Archive with tags , , , on July 20, 2011 by clairesayswhat

Oh, those crazy Kardashians! I can’t say that I’m surprised that they’re the latest pop culture folks to get their own nail polish tie-in. OPI’s got the movies and Nicole by OPI sticks to TV shows and pop-stars, which is very smart marketing if I do say so. Nicole’s Gossip Girl collection started it all, and they followed that one up with the Justin Bieber One Less Lonely Girl collection. I’ll freely admit that I own colors from both collections, and that I’m a pretty big fan of Nicole overall. The colors are bright and fun and good quality for the price point.

Honestly, the Kardashian Kolors are no exception. I just wish Kris had hired me to help name the colors because, personally, I think my names are better! Attention Kris: My consulting fee is $1,000 an hour, minimum of 10 hours. Call me! But seriously, I’m also not afraid to admit that I’ve watched Keeping Up With the Kardashians over the years. It skirts the boundary of where I draw the line with trash TV (although I’m not actually sure exactly where that line does end) and, as such, I feel I’m pretty qualified to give suggestions (and commentary!) on appropriate alternate names for the Kardashian Kolors:

Image from

Top Row, left to right:

  • Shameless Self-Promotion
–Let’s face it, thanks to Kris’ managerial manoeuvrings, the Kardashian name has become a brand through various promotional deal including everything from diet pills to well, nail polish!
  • Fame Whores
–Although not quite as bad as Paris Hilton in this arena, the Kardashian ladies have become experts at using their names, TV show, and personalities to gain notoriety. I’m using whore just as an analogy, btw! I actually think the Kardashian ladies are decent people. Seriously! I mean, if you had a mom who was willing to be your manager and get you a TV show and numerous endorsement deals and paid appearances I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t exactly be complaining…
  • Don’t Forget Your Spanx!
–I don’t think any of the Kardashian ladies are making any public appearances these days without the proper foundation garments. Especially Kim, if she’s wearing one of those tight Herve Leger bandage dresses, as she so often does.
  • DrunK in PubliK
–Need we count the episodes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians in which someone has exhibited some degree of drunkenness? I’m fairly certain everyone has had their moment with the hooch on this show
  • Sex Tape Katastrophe
    –Sorry, I couldn’t help it!
  • $$$
–Remember that band, !!!,? Well, this color name is meant to be sort of along those lines, except instead of pronouncing it chick-chick-chick, say KAching-KAching-KAching like a cash register instead. I think if you look really closely at any of their eyes, you’ll actually see three dollar signs in each of their pupils…

Bottom Row, left to right:

  • Kris’ New Face
–Oh, that Kris and her plastic surgery! Can’t say that I blame her, though. If I have the money when I’m her age and something needs a little pull or tuck, I’ll be gettin’ myself¬† a new face, too! But I think Kris has had at least a few other new faces prior to her current one…
  • It’s All Your Fault, Seacrest!
–If you want to blame anybody for this mess, blame Ryan Seacrest since he’s the creator and producer of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
  • Kim’s Krackberry
–On the show, Kim is pretty well-known for being attached to her cell-phone at all times. She and Khloe (or was it Kourtney?) even had a fight about it on one episode.
  • X-Ray Ass
–Surely you caught this season’s episode where Kim went to get an X-Ray done of her as to prove that it’s real, right?
  • Klash of the K’s
–Somebody’s always fighting with somebody on this show! I guess that’s how it is when you have so many siblings. I mean, I wouldn’t know, I’m an only child, thank god! Maybe this is partly why I’m so fascinated by this show…
  • Krazy Kharma
–Okay, so I was running of of words that start with K or words I could make start with K….
  • Bruce’s New Face
–I think this color is as creepy as Bruce’s new face and doesn’t really make sense in this collection but, there you have it!

Now, in case you really care, the actual names of the colors are: Top row, left to right: All Kendall-ed Up, Sealed with a Kris, Kim-pletely In Love, Khlo√© Had a Little Lam-Lam, Kourt is Red-y for a Pedi, Rainbow in the S-kylie. Bottom row, left to right: Disco Dolls, Listen to Your Momager!, Wear Something Spar-kylie, It’s All About the Glam, Follow Me on Glitter, Kendall on the Katwalk, My Empire… My Rules.

Truthfully, the actual names they came up with are pretty cute and fit the theme of the show and personalities of each family member well. This collection will be available later this year for the holiday season, with each bottle retailing for $7.99. We’ve seen similar colors in other Nicole collections (Follow Me on Glitter, anyone?), but I think they did a good job with the Kardashian Kolors. I’ve already got my eye on Rainbow in the S-kylie and Disco Dolls, and I am not ashamed!

What do you think? Will you be going krazy for any of the Kardashian Kolors?

Ombre Glitter Mani

So one day, I happened upon this awesome video tutorial by Jillian C. for Smokey Gradient Nails and decided to try my own version of it. Since I also recently purchased Orly’s Bubbly Bombshell shade from the Pin-Up collection I wanted to try it, too. Jillian uses something like 5 or 6 polishes in her smokey nails, which I thought was a little crazzzy although it does produce an amazing effect. She’s definitely talented.

For my version, I first used a coat of Scandal Secrets & Sparkle by Nicole by OPI. Then I layered 3/4 of my nails with a darker shade, Wink of Twink, also by Nicole by OPI. I love this shade because it’s like a disco ball after 3 coats! Scandal is thinner and less opaque. I really don’t use it all that often, but I thought it might lend itself well to creating the kind of glassy effect on the lower part of the nail that Jillian achieved.

Now, for the fun part! Using one of those good old triangular makeup sponges that you probably have around your makeup drawer (or, in my case, under the sink), I layered on the purple glitter! It’s really easy! You just glop on some of the glitter on the skinny side of the sponge and dab it on your nails. It took about 3 coats for me to build it up as opaque as I wanted it. You can watch Jillian’s video if you want to see the technique in action. Overall, this is one of the most fun I’ve ever had painting my nails, and I’m already dreaming up more ways to use the glitter polish-makeup sponge technique!
